SIFE BCIT Background

In 2002, the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) was established (for more information, please visit www.sifebcit.com).  SIFE BCIT is a not-for-profit student organization based on a collective vision of strengthening the local community through its projects.

Market Economics and Financial Literacy are two of the top criteria for qualifying SIFE projects. Over the past six years, through workshops and competitions, SIFE BCIT has empowered individuals in the local community with a greater understanding of business fundamentals and personal finance.

About the Campus Investor

Financial Literacy is one of the seven SIFE criteria that SIFE BCIT operates its projects under. In the past, in order to promote financial literacy, SIFE BCIT has partnered with a high school in the Burnaby area by hosting a business competition for a group of high school students accompanied with workshops on business fundamentals. This year, as part of SIFE BCIT’s efforts to promote financial literacy in the community, SIFE BCIT will be launching a new online site on investment and hosting its first annual Stock Challenge at BCIT.

The Campus Investor project is composed of two main parts, an online website component and the annual stock challenge that will take place this year at BCIT. The Campus Investor website (www.campusinvestor.com) is an online website that provides an online resource on basic investments, investment articles and an online discussion forum on investing catered to post-secondary students.

The SIFE Stock Challenge is a stock picking competition open to all BCIT students, with $1000 in prizes. The competition will be held in the spring semester from January 18, 2010 to March 19, 2010. Along with the competition, there will be 4 investment workshops that takes place on Wednesdays starting from January 20, 2010 at the BCIT Burnaby campus until the competition ends with a break during the 2010 Winter Olympics. The workshop will focus on basic investment, debt management, and stock market information. CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) is contributing to the stock challenge by providing prizes and will also run a couple of the workshops.
